Squanto
Lately — because of the season — I have been reading about The First Thanksgiving (though that term is excessively wrong) and about that group of religious fanatics The Pilgrim Fathers.  I already knew most of what I read, but the one area I knew shockingly (at least to me) little was of Squanto. He was kidnapped by the British in 1608, taken to Britain, learned some English, and...

Java 6 for OS X →
Thanks to the efforts of the OpenJDK guys BSD Java Research guys (it will soon be based on the OpenJDK), there is now a Java 6 port for OS X. Apple you can release yours any time now please, or — and here is a crazy thought — maybe you could release your enhancements to the community and we would be happy to work with you in the future…

A Strike on One Laptop Per Child →
The first part has a bit too much hyperbole, and misses some of the points of the OLPC project.  But overall, well written, funny, kicks the OLPC project (mostly) where they deserve it.  The conculsion is actually brilliant in a way, and is the kind of lateral thinking Negreponte used to be known for.  All you need to do is have a keyboard addon

Nov 27th
Dear debate people.
To whoever runs the presidential debates, I don’t want real Americans asking real question.  I want smart people from all sides of the political spectrum to ask hard questions.  I want the candidates to answer them.  I want the mediator to push back and get answers.  I want the experts to vote on if the question was answered and for the scores to be presented at the end. It won’t fix...

1-800-MUSIC-NOW! →
I came across this while fallowing a desire line on Wikipedia. I remember when it came out and thinking it was a good idea but the wrong way to do it. A lot of people though IVR (Interactive Voice Response) was going to be a Big Thing. A lot of people (including Enron) tried this kind of thing many times before it finally hit. Most brilliant ideas make it big because they are first, but...

Dear Microsoft
Dear Microsoft, I think you make a good operating system.  I really do.  Not a great one, but a really good one.  But it needs improvement.  I would like you to shamelessly copy something from Apple/NeXTStep.  I want you to copy the Application Package structure, so that to install you need to do nothing more than copy one file into place and it just works.  Please?  You are so close right now...

Hey UPS! A business idea for you
Here is an interesting idea for you: if you gave the option for me to upgrade how my package is shipped while it is in transit, I bet a ton of people would fall for it.  Right now I am watching a package move UPS Ground and kicking myself for not upgrading the shipping…

Don’t ask my why I thought to google for “Monkey Ninjas,” but I ended up here.  It turns out to bestrangely compelling (and strangely funny).  A crudely animated show about — well really what else could it be about? — Monkey Ninjas.  At the very least it is something to keep in reserve in case the WGA strike goes on too long…

Bored...
It’s 7:20 (ish) on a Saturday.  This used to be one of my happiest times.  Now?  Not so much.  It is sooo boring. There is no news.  The blogs are dead. Slashdot is dead. And I am not so desperate to go to Digg (In 2001 President Bush asked “Why do they hate us?” and in 2004 Digg rose to the top of that list).  The information pump I rely on is nearly at it’s driest (Sunday...
